They no doubt used Jade (or DSSSL, can't remember which) to generate that evil XHTML, but I still hates it. <question type="rhetorical" tone="sarcastic">What's wrong with plain text?</question> At least they could have pretty-printed it. It's not strictly software, but while I'm on my DNS hobby horse I really hates the way that given a zone file with a YYYYMMDDnn serial number Americans sometimes "accidentally" put YYYYDDMMnn; now I can't use the date for my serial number until 2004. Which part of "most significant part first" don't you understand, cowboy? I suppose I could add another n. But I'd hate to do that. PS Pan won't let me post without something it thinks is a valid email. Of course, it didn't bother telling me this when I created the profile. I hates it.

Tag layouts like <foo > are a symptom of the oh-so-wonderful Jade. ObHate: dhcpd, network aliases. 'nuff said. Oh, and bonus hate: challenge/response email systems.

I want the benighted authors of the documents to run them through tidy(1) *before* they give them to me, so I don't need tidy(1) or a web "browser" disturbing the karmic balance of my DNS server. Or better still, run them through lynx --dump and give me a text file. I can live without the emphasis, thanks, but I can't live with that nonsense, valid XHTML or no.

It actually looks like the formatted output of nsgmls or one of its descendants. There is actually a reason for the weird position of the \n, within the tags: in SGML/XML, it is the only place where it is absolutely certain that a whitespace is non-significant. Hence it looks bad but at least the file is broken into several lines. To come back to the topic of the list, I HATE getting several megabytes worth of SGML/XML in one big happy line. vi is NOT happy with it! -- Michel Rodriguez Perl & XML http://www.xmltwig.com
